Once we had a puppy

One day I got an email from the Make-a-Wish foundation.  There was a puppy that someone donated and they were doing a drawing.  On a whim, I entered my name into the drawing.  The next day I got a phone call informing me that I won!  We were the proud winners of an 8 week old lab/heeler puppy.  He was so adorable.  We were smitten.  Then Carter started itching and the pup (Oliver) was piddling all over the house, and I was going to lose my mind.  So two weeks later we have found a lovely new home for our "foster" pup.  It was fun while it lasted and now we are done.  We decided as a family that even though it would be hard, we couldn't provide Oliver with the happiest life he could have.  And now I am consoling sad children and looking for a new (small) pet.  Maybe a hamster?

I keep telling myself that it takes a lot of courage to recognize our own limitations and weaknesses, right?  I think I did the right thing.  But we do miss him.

  1. Oh, Beth! Oliver is darling! BUT you did the right thing. I hope you were able to find a good family for Ollie. It does take courage but at the end of the day, life will be just a little less complicated.

Good luck with the small pet thing. May I suggest a pair of female rats of the smaller variety. Or one of a large breed. Very friendly and intelligent. Males will spray.

    1. You have no idea how much comfort that comment brings to me. Thanks. Yes, remember the hamster tragedy of 2011?
